ACHF MILESTONES
1967: Saved Church-Waddel-Brumby House, Athens’ oldest residence from demolition
1972: Established Church-Waddel-Brumby House as a house museum and started the Athens Welcome Center
1974: Saved the Franklin House from demolition
1978: Nominated Cobbham and Downtown to the National Register of Historic Places
1980: Restored and adapted Fire Hall No. 2 as Foundation headquarters
1983-4: Nominated nine historic districts to the National Register of Historic Places
1985: Advocated for the passage of the Historic Preservation Ordinance for City of Athens
1990: Hosted workshops to discuss planning alternatives for Downtown East area
1994: Participated in re-design of The Classic Center to save Fire Hall No.1
1994: Assisted in saving the Wray-Nicholson House from demolition
1996: Established the Revolving Fund to protect at-risk historic properties
1996: Worked with UGA and Athens community to preserve Tanner Lumber
1997: Participated in development of Athens-Clarke Comprehensive Plan
1997: Acquired and developed Classic City Tours as a heritage tourism educational vehicle
1997: Worked with UGA and Athens community to save & relocate the Red Barn
1998: Began Athens Historic House Museum Association
1998-9: Assisted 5 neighborhoods with local historic district designation
1999: Co-sponsored with A-CC re-dedication of Wray-Nicholson House
2000: Established Hands On Athens program
2001: Partner in the Athens-Clarke County Bicentennial Celebration
2001: Transfer of Ware-Lyndon House decorative arts collection to ACHF
2002: Saved the Adcock Building from demolition
2003: Completed Athens Welcome Center SPLOST project
2006: Completed restoration of historic Church-Waddel-Brumby House Museum/Welcome Center
2006: Successfully completed expansion of Downtown Athens National Register Historic District
2006: Successfully completed designation of Downtown Athens Local Historic District
2007: Celebrating Foundation’s 40th anniversary
2007: Athens Historic House Museum Association published Museum Mile tour brochure
2007: Completed feasibility study for Oconee Street School/ACTION Building
2008: Successfully nominated Reese Street Historic District for local designation
2009: Athens-Clarke County designated one of the 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. (Nomination sponsored by ACHF and Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau.)
2009: Started the Athens Heritage Walks guided tour series
2010: Contributed to the successful designation of Milledge Avenue as a Local Historic District |
