Take a voyage through seven of the master works of one of Athens’ most accomplished architects, Frederick J. Orr (1874-1935). During the early years of the 20th century, Orr designed exuberant yet sophisticated buildings inspired by the populist styles of his day. Few records remain documenting Orr’s life in Athens but his legacy is well-represented by his designs. A native Athenian Orr is thought to have designed more than thirty buildings in Athens, primarily residences in the Five Points area. His work includes some of Athens most recognizable homes, and his hallmarks include sophisticated and varied styles that blend with the landscape and incorporate abundant natural light. On top of making a mark on Athens architecture, Orr often left a signature mark on his designs – an “O” in rounded windows and exterior details. Homes on the tour include:

Join us as we celebrate the architecture of Fred Orr in one of his premier homes, the Hardeman-Sams House in the heart of Athens’ historic Milledge Avenue National Register District. The evening will include a myriad of specialty dishes from local restaurateurs competing for the title of Best Overall from a panel of judges led by renowned local culinary instructor and writer, Rebecca Lang. To add a touch of elegance to the evening, sip a mint julep as we toast the winner of the Kentucky Derby, to be held earlier the same day. Guests can enjoy music by The Solstice Sisters while viewing a special exhibit on Fred Orr that explores his innovative contributions to Athens architecture and his life in his hometown of Athens.
